Do You Feel Overwhelmed Being A New Mom?

Did you recently have a baby and you’re having trouble adjusting to this major life transition? Are the challenges of motherhood affecting your sleeping and eating habits? Do you worry that you might have Postpartum Depression (PPD) or Postpartum Anxiety (PPA) and you could use some extra support?

Maybe you’re a first-time mom and you feel like you underestimated just how difficult parenting would be. Or perhaps you were already a mother, yet this time around, the postpartum experience has been far more challenging than you remembered. The postpartum period is different for every woman, and nothing can quite prepare you for this significant life transition.

Many New Moms Struggle With Complicated Emotions

Chances are you expected to feel excited and joyful after your baby arrived, but the reality of motherhood doesn’t always align with what you’d hoped for. You may feel physically and mentally exhausted, anxious, or isolated. Sometimes, you might just feel numb.

You might worry that struggling with these confusing emotions means that you won’t measure up as a parent. You care deeply about your new baby, yet you may feel guilty if you haven’t had the bonding experience that you imagined. Perhaps you wish you could open up about your feelings to your partner or someone else in your life, but shame might hold you back from asking for help.

In the midst of these disruptive changes, you might wish that you could simply feel like yourself again. You can regain your sense of identity in motherhood with the help of a postpartum depression therapist who specializes in treating postpartum depression. Through therapy, you can find the support and guidance you need to navigate the monumental shift of postpartum life.

The Postpartum Period Is Difficult For Every Mother

Expectant mothers are often told that their first days with their new baby will be blissful. But about 85% of women deal with the “baby blues” for a week or two once their baby has arrived. New mothers might feel sad, moody, or irritable. These feelings are normal as parents adjust to their new responsibilities and they generally fade away shortly.

However, approximately one in seven mothers experience postpartum depression and anxiety after giving birth, both of which are characterized by more severe symptoms. Women with PPD might suffer from fatigue or insomnia, disruptive negative thoughts, or significant fluctuations in appetite. Some mothers with PPD may feel like they can’t form the deep bond with their baby that they had hoped for.

Many Mothers Lack Support

Motherhood is not easy even with a strong support system. Today, lots of mothers feel like they’re expected to connect with their newborn instantly and navigate their challenges with ease. But at the same time, many parents do not have large extended families nearby to rely on, and rather than being part of a “village,” mothers often feel isolated and alone.

Many women also find that motherhood changes their relationship with their partner. Even if you and your partner discussed how to delegate responsibilities after welcoming your baby, finding the right balance might be tougher than you anticipated.

Furthermore, breastfeeding helps you connect to your baby in a way that your partner can’t. As your body heals, and you try to adapt to your new circumstances, you may feel like your partner doesn’t understand that you’re having a very different experience of parenthood.

If you’re living with postpartum depression, you may feel  at a loss as to where to turn. A postpartum depression therapist can help you process your conflicting emotions and feel centered again.

Postpartum Counseling Can Help You Find Your Footing

Perhaps you’ve already told your partner or a close friend about everything you’ve been going through since having a baby, but you felt as though they weren’t truly listening. Here at LunaJoy, our goal is for you to feel heard, seen, and validated in your feelings. You do not have to worry that your struggles will be minimized. You are free to share anything and everything that may be on your mind.

What To Expect In Sessions

During our first session, we’ll gather details about your experiences during pregnancy and motherhood so far. We will provide you with a safe, comfortable space where you can open up about the challenges you’ve faced.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by parenthood, we will apply problem-solving techniques and break down your issues into smaller, more manageable pieces. You’ll learn mind-body techniques such as breathwork and mindfulness, and you’ll also cultivate a sense of loving-kindness and compassion toward yourself.

In ongoing sessions, you will be gently guided to redefine who you are now that you have a baby and other aspects of your life—like career, sports, or hobbies—have been sidelined. Furthermore, your therapist will offer compassionate guidance to help you better communicate with your partner and your wider support system so that you can get the help you need in day-to-day life. Through therapy, you can begin to envision a brighter future for yourself and your family.

The Modalities We Use

In our practice, we focus heavily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you break down intrusive thoughts and neutralize them so that they no longer cause you distress. For example, if you ever struggle to forgive yourself for minor mistakes, or if your symptoms of depression are accompanied by disturbing thoughts, CBT can help you let go of these patterns and cultivate a calmer mindset.

Your counselor can also draw on principles from Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), enabling you to create a new and empowering narrative for yourself. Through EFT, your therapist can help you integrate your baby into your worldview and gain confidence in your abilities as a parent.

Postpartum counseling offers the perspective every new mother needs. As you deepen your self-acceptance, you’ll learn to let go of perfectionism and ask for help when you need it. With support, the stress of parenthood can be more manageable and you can have a joyful experience with your baby.

But You May Wonder Whether Postpartum Therapy Is Right For You…

Could postpartum depression go away over time without therapy?

While symptoms of postpartum depression often lessen over time on their own, you do not have to wait to find relief. Studies indicate that 80 percent of those who receive treatment for PPD see an improvement in their mental health. By working with a supportive therapist, you can begin to find joy in the early days of motherhood and heal on your own timeline, rather than hoping that your symptoms will lift on their own. Since postpartum issues can last for a long time, it’s essential to seek help sooner rather than later.

I’m already so busy - how can I make time for therapy?

We understand that as a mother, you’re juggling countless responsibilities, which is why we aim to make postpartum therapy sessions as convenient as possible for our clients. We have weekend and evening availability, and we also offer virtual therapy so that you can attend sessions from home. If you’d like to attend sessions in person but you’re worried about finding childcare, you’re welcome to bring your children along with you.

I feel guilty about not breastfeeding—am I a bad Mom if I stop trying?

You may have been facing pressure to exclusively breastfeed your baby. But for many mothers and babies, breastfeeding isn’t an option for a wide variety of personal reasons. If you’ve found breastfeeding challenging, we will support and encourage you as you explore other choices that work best for you and your baby. All mothers are welcome at LunaJoy, no matter what decisions you’ve made regarding breastfeeding.
