Are You Struggling With Intrusive Thoughts?
Do you frequently deal with disturbing thoughts and compulsions that seem to occur out of the blue? Have you tried to avoid certain situations that trigger them? Are you worried that these thoughts mean something is inherently wrong with you?
No matter how hard you try to think of something else, maybe you can’t distract yourself from your intrusive thoughts and compulsions. Even though you know that they’re irrational, unrealistic, and won’t help you, you can’t stop ruminating and obsessing over them. You might be concerned that these recurring intrusive thoughts make you abnormal and you wish you could simply feel calm and content again.
OCD Can Affect Every Area Of Your Life
Living with intrusive thoughts can leave you feeling anxious and depressed. You don’t want to act on these thoughts, but you can’t seem to escape them.
If you have been living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, you do not have to continue suffering in silence. With therapy for OCD, you can learn to cope with your fears in a safe environment and learn to navigate life without feeling the urge to engage in unhealthy compulsions.
Many People Suffer From Intrusive Thoughts And Compulsions
People with OCD often wish that they could feel “normal” - but truthfully, almost everyone experiences intrusive thoughts from time to time. Many people also adopt rituals that briefly alleviate their anxiety in stressful situations. However, when intrusive thoughts and compulsions begin to affect your mental health, your relationships, and your overall quality of life, professional help is necessary.
Factors That Can Contribute To OCD
Anyone can contribute to OCD, but certain factors do make some people more vulnerable to this condition than others, such as living through trauma or a major lifestyle change. For example, women who have recently given birth can develop postpartum OCD, which can dramatically affect their mental health and their ability to bond with their baby.
The lack of knowledge and awareness surrounding postpartum OCD in particular can make it especially scary for new moms to deal with. Lots of mothers do not even know that they are at risk for developing OCD during the postpartum period. Frightening symptoms can catch them off guard at a very vulnerable time.
Furthermore, many people with OCD suffer from anxiety around contamination, disease, and germs. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are dealing with these symptoms today. Their valid concerns about contracting the virus can exacerbate existing anxieties and spiral into full-blown OCD symptoms.
OCD can be debilitating, but through counseling, you can find freedom from your symptoms. With support from a therapist, you can break down your fears and gain the skills you need to move through life with confidence and self-assurance
OCD Therapy Can Help You Address Your Anxiety
A few benefits of anxiety treatment include:
Perhaps you’ve been living with OCD for so long that you’ve started to assume you’ll never be able to heal.
However, a counselor who specializes in treating OCD can help you achieve dramatic improvements in your symptoms, enhance your quality of life, and reclaim the time that you’ve lost.
At our practice, we offer highly personalized treatment for your symptoms and triggers.
Through gradual exposure to various stressors, you can shift your behavioral responses and get comfortable in situations that you previously feared. We create a safe, nonjudgmental space to open up about any intrusive thoughts that have been bothering you.
What To Expect In OCD Therapy Sessions
During your first session, your therapist will get a picture of your full history with OCD. You’ll be able to discuss when your symptoms started, what sorts of intrusive thoughts and compulsions you’re dealing with, what triggers your symptoms, and how your symptoms have changed over time. We’ll explore the potential roots of your symptoms and we’ll start discussing your goals for treatment.
Treatment Approaches For OCD
Your treatment plan will be specifically designed to help you address your personal fears and intrusive thoughts. Your therapist will guide you through Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). This is a safe pathway for you to break down your fears and work up the courage to face the situations that scare you most.
With ERP, you’ll start by developing a “fear hierarchy.” For instance, if you need to take the train for work, but you’ve been too scared to try, you’ll work with your therapist to come up with a list of steps you need to complete in order to conquer this fear. This might include walking to the train station, standing on the platform, and eventually, riding the train. Your therapist will walk you through these situations one by one, until you’re able to tackle the entire hierarchy without engaging in compulsions or experiencing intrusive thoughts.
Your therapist can also incorporate Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy into your treatment plan. CBT will help you analyze cognitive distortions created by your intrusive thoughts. You’ll be able to examine your beliefs and identify thought patterns that are creating fear and holding you back. Furthermore, your therapist will help you build up new beliefs and cultivate a more positive mindset.
We have provided counseling for clients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for over a decade. With the right treatment plan, you can overcome your fears, free yourself from intrusive thoughts, and live a fulfilling life.
But You May Still Have Questions About OCD Therapy…
I’ve felt this way forever - what if I can’t get better?
Perhaps you can’t remember a time when intrusive thoughts and compulsions didn’t affect your life. If so, you might assume that you have treatment-resistant OCD. But even if you’ve suffered from OCD for many years, healing is within your reach. At our practice, your therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific fears and takes the roots of your symptoms into account. You will be able to work at your own pace, without feeling rushed through treatment.
Could medication help me manage my symptoms?
Many of our clients do see an improvement in their OCD symptoms with medication. While we do not prescribe medication for every client, your therapist might recommend it if they feel it is an appropriate option for you. We can work with you to find the right psychiatrist who offers medication. In combination with CBT and ERP, medication can be an effective option for managing OCD.
Therapy hasn’t worked for me in the past - is it worth trying again?
If you sought therapy for OCD before and were disappointed in the outcome, you may benefit from a different approach to treatment. During your intake session, you can talk to your therapist about which techniques you tried before and what didn’t work for you. We can take your previous experiences into account as we build a completely personalized treatment plan. Sometimes, seeing a new therapist is the ticket to healing.
