In Support of Online Support Groups
Have you been looking for a support group online? Or maybe you’re wondering how to explain the virtual community you’ve already found to others who don’t get it. Join us as we explore the therapeutic value of an online community!
Let’s talk about what makes online support groups unique!
Before you begin, remember that our professionals are always here to help
You can’t schedule your mental health needs
Unfortunately, anxiety and stress aren’t so easy to pencil in. The times you’re feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or in need of a reminder of your strength happen despite your well-scheduled life. Doesn’t it make sense to have support that can be there when it does?
For this reason, expanding your support system to include spaces where you feel both safe and understood can be life altering. You can cast your metaphorical net of support beyond the tangible spaces you find yourself each day to make it as easily accessible as your Tik Tok dashboard and, honestly, we think you should.
There are advantages to having a support system
The profound impact of making space for the messy things in life is becoming more well-established as society opens up to the importance of mental health. But if we’re willing to see therapists and talk to our friends about how we’re really doing, what do we need support groups online for?
While choosing to develop a relationship with a licensed counselor is an amazing step, it’s also only part of the process to developing a thriving support system. You don’t want to find yourself in need of a hug, a high five or a safe space to let out those big feelings on a non-therapy day without another place to turn.
Online support groups can meet you where no one else can
Due to their digital nature and how easy it is to span time zones and obligations, support groups online are accessible in ways other forms of community care may not be.
If you’re in the middle of a panic attack, having a good cry, or up in the middle of the night thanks to insomnia, the internet is there too. It’s really no surprise that the benefit of online communities is supported by science. Anywhere you are, however, you need to show up, you have access to the virtual spaces you seek support.
In addition to the always-on nature of the internet, online communities also tap into a sense of anonymity that may allow you to access deep vulnerabilities you otherwise would keep hidden. When you don’t have to look someone in the eye after you tell them your difficult truths, it can be easier to get them out and find support among others who understand.
While you shouldn’t use digital support groups to navigate crisis situations, they can be an appropriate space to help you process and reflect afterward.
Through the use of sectioned groups, private spaces, and adequate trigger warnings, there is a space for everyone who needs it, and no need to make an appointment to find yourself among others who feel like you do.
You might be looking for support for your occasional panic attacks or occupational trauma, or you may find yourself in need of support for bereavement. From dedicated spaces for first responders to child loss support groups, there is a myriad of spaces to find the haven you need right inside your phone.
One of the most incredible things about online communities is that they’re living, breathing things. These relationships grow and develop with us.
Both popular and niche message boards are popping up across the internet for every conceivable need. No matter the type of forum you choose in creating your online support network, there’s no doubt that these communities are shaping the safety you can access from anywhere you find yourself.
How do I find a support group online?
There’s so much more than generic spaces and shouting into the void but finding one can feel daunting. From Reddit communities to privately owned and secure forums, the breadth of offerings gives a clear picture of what you can find online when you need support, but it doesn’t make finding yours any clearer.
If you want to get started now, a Google search can give you an excellent start. At a minimum, it’ll help you figure out what you don’t want and what matters most to you. The social media accounts you frequent and follow may also have links to their relevant communities if you already know of any pages that feel a bit like a haven for you.
Once you’ve got a general idea, ask your therapist! When we can, it feels good for us to be able to offer you ongoing ways to continue the work we do together in session.
Your therapist can help you hone your wish list and find reputable spaces where you’ll find the security and support you need for whatever is making waves in your life right now. At Luna Joy, we’ve even got a page of resources that can help you get started now.
Online, in person, or over the phone, we are wishing you a rich and supported system of love to help you care for your mental health wherever you are.
